Acoustic enclosures for two R290 refrigeration units in pharmaceutical process cooling

Starting point
For two refrigeration units using the refrigerant R290 for process cooling in a pharmaceutical production plant, two acoustic enclosures were built entirely from INOX (stainless steel).
Project goal and measured result
The goal was to reduce the total noise emissions of the refrigeration units by 14 dB(A). The result speaks for itself – or rather: it is considerably quieter. Based on in-situ measurements, a noise reduction of 15.6 dB(A) was achieved, exceeding the project goal.

Key technical facts
- Refrigerant: R290 (propane) – a natural, energy-efficient refrigerant with a very low GWP.
- Safety concept: Integrated ATEX ventilation for safe operation with a flammable refrigerant.
- Air flow: Designed for an air volume of 86,000 m³/h per unit to ensure reliable heat rejection at an air velocity of 5 m/s.
- System design: Two identical acoustic enclosures provide a uniform, easy-to-maintain solution for two separate units.
Integrated engineering approach
Acoustics and plant engineering must be planned together – from air flow and ATEX safety to the required sound insulation.
